Responsible gambling: help lines and self-exclusion
Gambling is entertainment with a cost, not a way to make money. Free, confidential help is available in Tasmania at any hour.

This guide covers a resort with a casino in it, so it carries this page on every visit. Casino areas at Country Club Tasmania are for adults aged 18 and over with photo identification. Nothing on this site encourages gambling.
Help lines
| Service | Number | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| Gambling Help (national) | 1800 858 858 | Free support at any hour; gamblinghelponline.org.au |
| Anglicare Tasmania — Gamblers Help | 1800 243 232 | Free counselling, support groups, financial counselling; can arrange a self-exclusion order — anglicare-tas.org.au |
| Relationships Australia | 1300 364 277 | Listed by the resort for support and counselling |
Anglicare Tasmania notes that outside its office hours callers can use the national line, 1800 858 858. Its counsellors work from offices in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie, and family members of a person who gambles can call as well.
Self-exclusion
There are two routes. Country Club Tasmania runs its own self-exclusion programme, arranged through the Federal Rewards Desk in the casino. Anglicare's Gamblers Help service can arrange a self-exclusion order that bars a person from gambling areas in Tasmania. Either can be started by telephone or in person.
Keeping it in proportion
The resort's responsible gambling page offers a short set of guidelines, paraphrased here:
- Never gamble with borrowed money.
- Spend only what can be afforded, and decide the limit before starting.
- Stop at the limit; do not try to win back what has been lost.
- Listen to family and friends, who may notice a problem first.
The resort also points to the Tasmanian Government's gambling harm-minimisation information, published by the Department of Treasury and Finance.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Spending more time or money than intended, more often.
- Borrowing, or using money meant for bills, to gamble.
- Hiding gambling from family or friends.
- Feeling anxious, irritable or low when not gambling.
Any of these is a reason to call one of the numbers above. The call is free and confidential.
